Polis Chrysochous, or Polis for short, is in the district of Paphos in Cyprus, close to the nature reserve of the Akamas Peninsula. It is a popular tourist destination as it has soft sand beaches, water sport facilities and the picturesque fishing port of Laksi, with its many fish taverns, close by. Polis is a prefect place to use as a base to explore the wonderful Akamas Peninsula which is thickly wooded and mountainous to the north. Nature trails border the ocean with spectacular views over the Bay and it is a haven for many rare kinds of flora and fauna as many parts are inaccessible. There is also a loggerhead turtle sanctuary in the area.
The Akamas Peninsula is said to take its name from the son of Theseus, a hero of the Trojan Wars who founded a city called Akamantis here. no traces of that city have been found but the legend lives on. It is popular for many kinds of activity holidays including walking or horse riding in the forests or the trails close to the ocean and hiking or climbing in the mountains. A popular spot to visit is the Baths of Aphrodite, a charming spring fed pool surrounded by lush vegetation and dotted with colorful wild flowers in the springtime. It is said that the Greek goddess Aphrodite met her lover Adonis for the first time when he came across her bathing naked in the pool while he was hunting in the forest. They were both instantly enamored by the beauty of each other and fell in love. Also well worth a visit is the ruined castle at Pyrgos where Aphrodite was reputed to have visited after her bath.
The climate in Polis is warm and pleasant for most of the year although in July and August the temperature can reach 35or 36C. The most popular months to visit are may, June, September and October when the temperature is between 25c and 30C and the humidity low. The Mediterranean Ocean is warm and clear and ideal for swimming or water sports and the cooler mountains are close by. Polis is only 45 minutes from the airport at Paphos and two hours from Larnaca airport so is easy to get to.
